Extra Credit
Please remember that extra credit is not applied to the grade until the end of the term. Extra credit will not be applied to a failing grade (below 60%). Extra credit is only applied to passing grades to help increase the passing grade.
Class Donations
-Donate one or more books to the classroom. Book Donations are a 3% increase on your term grade (one grade increase, example: B+ becomes an A-). Available even if you have not turned-in all assignments.
Term 1- Donate the book I Am Malala (Two ways to complete this):
Option 1-Parents can make an online donation to my project at Donors Choose. I have a project to raise enough money to buy several copies of I Am Malala. With this option you don’t have to locate the book or worry about shipping. Just make the donation, email me the receipt, and you’re finished. Once the quota has been met, this option will no longer be available (first come first serve). Any donation amount will qualify for the extra credit, but in case you were wondering, each copy of the book is $8.00. To donate this book go to: www.donorschoose.org/mr.mildon
Great News! For a limited time (Aug. 28), your donation will be matched--$8 becomes $16, $20 becomes $40. Make sure you type in the promo code: SPARK
Option 2- Students/Parents may purchase and donate to the classroom used or new copies, hardbound or softbound of: I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai (Cannot be the Young Readers Edition). A used hardcover is currently under $7.00 at Amazon (that includes shipping).
ISBN-13: 978-0316322409 and 978-0316322423 (If you can afford more than one, I will take them J)

Watching Literature (Must have all assignments turned-in)
I offer extra credit each term because there are some types of literature that are not feasible for us to study in class. Film and plays are both wonderful genres of literature. Students that attend approved plays/films and write a critical analysis paper will receive extra credit as follows:
Shakespeare Play
Each term I will offer up to 10% of your total term grade (extra credit) if you attend a live production of any Shakespeare play. It must be an actual play (not a farce) and must be live (not on film). You will need to turn in your ticket stub, program, and analysis of the play.
Other Play or Musical
Each term I will offer up to 5% of your total term grade if you attend a live theatre production. You will need to turn-in a ticket stub, program, and analysis of the play. ***A bonus 1% will be awarded for Fremont High productions.
Film
Each term I will offer a couple of movie titles that align with what we are studying that term. Students will receive up to 3% of the total term grade if they watch and submit a critical analysis of the film.
Important-
All live productions must be complete works, polished, and performed to audiences. They must also be at a high school or higher quality (your brother’s Jr. high school play will not count). If you have any questions about a production, please ask before you attend.
***I will let students know of opportunities to see plays and musicals. I do not endorse any productions. It is the responsibility of the student and their parent/guardian to ensure it is appropriate material for the student to watch. ***
Students may complete one Shakespeare play, one other play, and one film each term. Points will only be awarded if all requirements are met.
What is the critical analysis paper for extra credit? It is a one page (MLA Format) paper. Students must include a thesis (claim) and discuss a theme. Evidence must come from the text. I do not expect exact quotes because the performance will be live.
